Remote Support Safety

Remote support safety

How remote support helps, how it can be misused and how to protect yourself

Remote-support software is a legitimate way to receive technical help. It is also attractive to scammers because access granted by the customer can let another person see or control the computer.

The simple rule

Only grant access for support that you requested or already agreed

Do not judge a request only by the software name, caller ID, website or logo. Verify the support request using contact details you obtained independently.

Before a session

Check the ticket, appointment or maintenance arrangement. If anything feels wrong, stop and call JM Restart on 01473 527430.

During a session

Stay alert to what is happening. Never disclose a banking PIN, password or one-time code. Ask the technician to explain unfamiliar actions.

End the session

Ask us to disconnect if you are uncomfortable. You may exit or uninstall Splashtop Streamer, although this may prevent agreed support or maintenance.

TalkTalk customers

A network safety service may block Splashtop

TalkTalk says its scam-protection service may block remote-access software, including Splashtop, because scammers sometimes misuse this type of software. A block does not automatically mean the JM Restart installer is malicious, but it is a reason to stop and verify the request.

Do not switch off a safety feature simply because an unexpected caller tells you to. If a legitimate JM Restart session is being blocked, contact us first. We can confirm the support request, help identify the cause and refer you to the current provider guidance. Changing DNS or security settings can affect other protections and should be assessed for the actual connection.
