TalkTalk and remote support

When HomeSafe blocks genuine remote support

TalkTalk’s scam protection may block remote-access services such as Splashtop. The protection has a useful purpose, but it can also interrupt a support session that you requested from JM Restart.

Why this happens

A genuine support tool can still be misused by a scammer

Remote-support software lets a technician help without visiting your home or office. Criminals sometimes persuade people to install the same type of software, so TalkTalk blocks remote-access traffic as part of its scam protection.

Splashtop’s current guidance says TalkTalk blocks remote-access software through HomeSafe and may also block name lookups through TalkTalk’s DNS service. This does not mean that every remote-support program or every support request is unsafe. It means the request should be verified before any protection is changed.

The benefit of the block

It can make it harder for an unexpected caller to establish a remote connection after frightening or pressuring somebody. That extra pause gives the customer time to stop and check who is asking for access.

The drawback

It can also stop a planned session with a technician you know and trust. Genuine support may not connect until the TalkTalk setting or another network restriction has been identified and handled safely.

What to do

Verify the support request before changing HomeSafe

  1. Stop if the request was unexpected. Do not change a security setting because an unknown caller, pop-up or message tells you to.
  2. Contact JM Restart independently. Call 01473 527430 or use an existing ticket to confirm the technician and the planned work.
  3. Use your own TalkTalk account or TalkTalk support. If you decide to change HomeSafe, open TalkTalk My Account yourself or ask TalkTalk for current instructions. Provider screens and setting names can change.
  4. Try the agreed session again. Keep an eye on the connection notification and ask the technician to explain unfamiliar actions.
  5. Review the protection afterwards. If a setting was changed only for the session, decide whether it should be restored when the work is complete.

Still not connecting?

Some TalkTalk connections may also use DNS settings that interfere with Splashtop. JM Restart can help check the router and connection. Changing DNS can alter how other safety and filtering services behave, so we will explain the effect before recommending a change.

Remember

A block is a prompt to check, not a reason to panic

Do not rely only on a caller’s name, number or logo. A real JM Restart technician will be comfortable with you stopping the session and contacting us independently. We will never ask you to transfer money, buy gift cards or cryptocurrency, reveal a banking PIN, or disclose a one-time security code.
